Saving Food the Old Fashioned Way; The Food Saver Jar
Probably the most ried and true method of saving food that is still in wide use to day is the mason jar. Bottling foods in a glass jar was found, long ago, to be a great way to preserve them. Even though they have been around so long, they are still readily available and are in high use today.
A food saver jar can be purchased from a variety of sources and they are extremely economical. You can easily find them in many super markets and discount stores. Not only do they function as containers for food storage, they can also be used to serve food, as well as preserve it for extremely long periods of time. When making jelly, jam, or preserves, the first thing that is sought is a glass food saver jar in order to provide the best protection with the best seal for the food items.
Glass food saver jars are often sealed at the opening using wax, rubber, or silicon in order to keep the food fresh and the seal air tight. As long as the jar is not opened again, nothing will get into the jar, keeping its contents safe from outside elements such as excess air, water, bugs, and any other deteriorating factors. However, since they are obviously made out of glass and are typically clear in appearance, the glass jars cannot save your food from the destructive principles of light, making it imperative that when using them for the creation and storage of preserves and jams that they be stored in a dark place such as a cabinet or cupboard until you are ready to use them.
Not only are glass food saver jars an excellent way to store your jams and preserves, they are also used in the commercial food production industry for the same purpose, such as the creation and storage of pickles, mushrooms, and several other different types of vegetables. Have you ever noticed when purchasing items what type of container your food is housed in initially? There are many different food items, especially vegetables that are already preserved for quick use, making the glass jar the best possible container for them to initially be housed in. When used for initial storage, many mass produced items in glass storage containers are pressure sealed to keep a tight, immovable lid on the item. This is more cost effective than using wax or silicon seals for each container, keeping the costs low enough to use the glass jars for containment.
Glass jars may be one of the oldest ways to preserve and store food, but they are still one of the options in the highest demand. Not only are they a green way to preserve your food by being long lasting and able to withstand hundreds of uses, but they are also extremely well sealed, allowing them to maintain an air tight seal between the elements and your food. They can be purchased commercially at many different locations in various shapes and sizes, allowing them to be an economical solution to your food storage needs.
